Goat Farming

Background

Kizimba Social Enterprise deals in farming, breeding, and commercial production of goats. We support out growers within the community to adopt best practices of modern goat farming to increase their production. This is done through training, capacity building, and the introduction of improved goat breeds. Our farm facilities are easily accessible by the local farmers.

Since 2016, Kizimba Social Enterprise has been running a Community Goat Breeding Project where we encourage the community to crossbreed their local goat breeds with our high breed and the offspring reaches the market 3 times quicker than their pure local breeds. We buy the high breed male goats (bucks) and grant access to the community so that they can use them to cross breed with their indigenous goats and the offspring of the crossing is the Improved Breed.

One of the communities that has appreciated the model is Alemere Parish, Agwingiri Sub-county in Amolatar district. The community identified and offered about 10 acres of land with access to the water for the Community Goats Breeding project to be built.

The collaboration is in such a way that; the community identifies the land, and agrees with their leadership on the methods which every member of the community with goats will access the breeding site. The local government, in this case in the Sub-county of Agwingiri, supports the project with technical support such as offering the services of the veterinary officer (who is employed by the local government), and link the community to some of the government livelihood projects which are aligned to goat farming ventures.

Kizimba Social Enterprise (KSE) LTD, funded the farm visit tour of the community leadership to a modern goat breeding farm to see and learn. KSE have procured and provided 15 bucks (improved goat breed) which the community uses for the goats breeding on site. We have built the infrastructure which include the fence and the pens on the land given by the community. KSE LTD is also responsible for the day to day running of the Goats Breeding Project with the support of the selected committee. We will be collaborating and sourcing for funding to help in the expansion of the Goats Breeding Project including linking the community goats farmers to the available market.
